Baskin forms a narrative that cycles around subjective constants: local and ancient mythologies, animal and figural depiction, folk-like engendering and interpretation. The owl of this woodcut finds a gnarled, elongated form from the artist’s hand, a depth of focus put into the roots and curls of the talons, whilst the prevalent wise wide eyes—and the entirety of the head itself—are almost entirely obscured in an impressionist flurry of stroke and feather.
I just cant put my finger on it. I can feel the opinions and ideas rise inside me. Something is telling me, but it does not come from speech, it does not come from thought. Ideas, they get muffled things influence them but not this. Not this feeling, I know that this is fact, reality grasping at me. Some say it comes from the gut but I feel it in my heart. I feel the hot breath and fire present there. Some call it intuition; others have been known to call it magic. Not me, I know this feeling too well and I listen to her, I listen to her truth that unknowingly guides me. I listen to my dragon and so shall you. [Ellie Strange]
