Xie Dong

Xie Dong, a painting-lover, bone china designer and artist, was born in Beijing and live in Beijing now. She graduated from Beijing art & Design Academy in 1988. In the beginning of her career, she did something about ceramics, however, what she did couldn’t satisfy with what she thought. Then there was a chance that she knew bone china, and she was convinced by its beauty since then. There is a dissoluble bond between her and bond china that makes her put all her energy into it. When the first cup was born, she praised it as the gift from God. Among these years of bone china creation, she created 5 series of bone china, including series of fold, series of water flowing, series of inflating, series of melting ice and series of marine organisms. These beautiful and creative bone china products make Xie Dong win a lot of honor and prizes. She won the Best Chinaware Design Award of 2005 ELLE DECORATION; she was invited to attend 2006 Design Miami Grand Exhibition; in 2007, she was invited to grand Exhibition in China Today’s Art Museum and as a designer of Italian Famous Brand DRIADE; she also became the visiting lecturer of Central Academy of Fine Arts and won the Best Lighting and Accessories Award of EDIDA; in 2009, she was invited by ATCASA International Design Channel (Exhibition of master designed small gifts of 2009 holding by ATCASA Italy headquarters) and attended 2009 100% Design Shanghai with the new artifact designed together with SWAROVSKI; also CDM(China Design Market) Milan Fair in 2010; in this year, she was invited to Melbourne nǚ yì shù series-V, the Bright Dreams in Hague, the “China New Design”—the official celebration of Sino-italian culture year and the Beijing International Design Triennial held by the National Museum of China. Her designs were introduced by many medias at home and abroad, including: Box Circa 40:Designers around 40 years old, Magazines Designing, La Vie, Urbane, Art And Design, CASA, ELLE, SPACE, TRENDS HOME, BQ WEEKLY, City Pictorial, COSMOPOLITAN, Esquire, I LOOK and so on. In 2011,she was invited by Poltrona Frau, which is a famous Italian brand, to design a Century Armchair. In the same year, she attended Milano Fashion Global Summit and makes a speech. While in real life, Xie Dong is a person who is not mindful of frame and gain. She never used QQ, MSN, even the twitter, as they are troublesome. What she thinks are all about the creation of bone china. She would spend time on adopting cats and dogs, because they give people too much love, which is so touching, and love and moving are the biggest factor for her creation. If you have seen her works, you’ll understand that she put so many feelings into them and they seem like her babies. As a completist, she wants all her works are in their best condition when she shows them. Xie Dong is also a person understands to forgive. She shows her magnanimity to those people who have copied her works. Just like all her works are white, because that is a color stands for forgiveness. All her works contain a creative concept, which is “seizing the ephemeral moments’. And that is her inspiration, because they are the most beautiful. Just as what she said, “With eyes closed, I sense with my hands—- all that is flowing, floating, weightless, shapeless, uncertain in the air….and then command them to reveal themselves with a conjuration, to reveal their true identity of physical shape”. Xie Dong’s life is so simpe that there’s just bone china and herself in her world; at the same time, it is not that simple, as those works root in life, reflect life and service for life. They are closely interrelated to the details in life. She is infecting everyone around her with her beauty and happiness. And this is Xie Dong, our great artist.

Title: Tall Wrinkle Cups

Artist: Xie Dong

Xie Dong only sought to work in porcelain after noticing the beauty in the wrinkles and folds of a tinfoil chocolate bar wrapper, translating those ephemeral qualities to ceramic — a more permanent but naturally fragile and delicate looking cross-medium. The use of Bone China, made locally, means the china retains a translucent, ivory-coloured quality once fired, and these ‘Zhezhou’ or ‘Wrinkle’ cups intentionally impress the texture, creases and elusive dynamics inherent in tinfoil.
