The paintings of artist Hanna Jaeun are pretty wildly surreal. Still, something about the symbolic creatures and objects that inhabit her work can be strangely familiar. Her acrylic on wood panel paintings nearly always make use of animal imagery and the rich metaphor that accompanies it. Jauen references the uneasy relationship between humans and the natural world as well as innate animal desires in people. She says in her statement, “The people in my paintings are either physically part-animal or longing to be animal…My animals bring to life my desire to tell a story.”
